about
I'm Dirk, an artist, designer and animator based in Munich, Germany. Ever since I won my first art prize for a picture I drew at primary school, I have dreamed of making art my everyday work. I have since spent most of my adult life doing exactly that: drawing.
After graduating from the University of Applied Sciences in Augsburg in 2005, I joined the Süddeutsche Zeitung, one of Germany's leading national daily newspapers, working for their magazine, website and app section. Over the years, I have become increasingly focused on illustration. I have created thousands of illustrations for magazines, newspapers, book and podcast covers, exhibition design and more. Several regular weekly and monthly columns published by well-established German media outlets are accompanied by my illustrations, and I am the co-author of six children's books, including a bestseller with over 100,000 copies sold. My clients are based in Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Switzerland and the US.
Ever since my first illustrations, I have enjoyed drawing people and finding humour in everyday experiences. I am always looking for the absurd, comical or astonishing aspect of a story that can be depicted to enhance its meaning. I think a lot about colour, and I always try to convey as much as possible with as few lines as necessary.
